Sandalodus
Sandalodus is an extinct genus of cartilaginous fish from the Late Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian periods. It was named by John Strong Newberry and Amos Henry Worthen in 1866. Charles Eastman classified the genus as a member of Cochliodontidae in 1903, which has been followed by subsequent authors. Some species of the genus have been found to belong to the same animal as Deltodus, and the genus' validity has been questioned.
No picture of Sandalodus was found. Wikipedia, Wikidata and iDigBio were searched and had none. Smithsonian Open Access did not answer, so this is what the others held rather than everything there is. GBIF was asked, and what came back is not recorded: nothing, or a picture this site could not tie to Sandalodus, or no answer at all. This entry cannot say which.

Time the record covers
At least 68 million years on record.
The record covers at least 342.9 Mya to 274.4 Mya. No occurrence read is dated outside 358.86 Mya to 266.9 Mya.
5 occurrences of Sandalodus on record, most of them in the Carboniferous. Bar height is expected occurrences, not a count: each fossil is spread across the span it is dated to, so a tall narrow bar means tight dating and a low wide one means loose.
When
5 occurrences- Carboniferous60%
- Permian40%
These are dates about fossils, not the animal: the record can only begin after it arose and end before it died out, so either end may reach further. Shares are expected occurrences: a fossil dated to a span is counted partly in each period it straddles. More on what this infers.

The Paleobiology Database records 5 sites for Sandalodus, and this reads all of them. The number is how many of those sites it was catalogued from too. The 24 sharing the most are listed.
This is not a list of everything alive at the time. It is only what has come out of the same ground as this animal and been written down.

Each of the 5 occurrences read was entered from one of these publications, ordered by how many each accounts for. This is not a search for papers mentioning the name. Entries link to doi.org where the Paleobiology Database holds an identifier, and to its own record where it does not.
